  1. never have more then one. personally i would just keep avast and get rid of mcafee because it sucks,

  2. do not keep two antiviruses at the same time.
i recommend avast, but its your choice. The malware detection of avast is higher (98,3%) McAfee (97,1%). This 1% of difference seems nothing, but it is equal to 1000 trojans and worms.
    2 Antiviruses may conflict

  3. you done good by getting avast but you can do even better by getting rid of mcafee.but if you want to get a paid version get kaspersky internet security 2010 thats what im running the best out there.

  4. Nik

Get Rid of McAfee. Not only because 2 anti-viruses can screw up your computer, but because McAfee sucks.

    Keep Avast!
    Dump McAfee
    Get Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
    Get Spybot Search And Destroy
    Get CCleaner
    Get Defraggler
    Get SpywareBlaster

    BE SAFE
    ALWAYS UPDATE
    ALWAYS SCAN
    NEVER USE McAfee

Free Anti-Virus Programs are great. Sure they lack one or two things that the paid for programs offer, but there are free Programs made by different companies that can take the place of those to make the free just as good or even better than the paid.

  5. Choose one. Uninstall the other. Personally, I prefer Avast. YMMV.

This is what a Microsoft MVP has to say about the subject. You may also want to consider reading her entire web-page on “How to prevent Malware”. It is one of the best that I have seen.
    http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/prevention.html

“Never install more than one Antivirus and Firewall! Rather than giving you extra protection, it will decrease the reliability of it seriously! The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, your system may lock up due to both software products attempting to access the same file at the same time. Also because more than one Antivirus and Firewall installed are not compatible with eachother, it can cause system performance problems and a serious system slowdown.”

The free version of Avast is a crippled (but still very useful) version of the full paid edition that is available to home users only. The big money is selling in the corporate and enterprise environment.
